OK, Walter's suggestion helped, but still not working.

Now httpd starts, but only the first one, children die with segfaults.
/var/log/httpd/error_log fills up with repeated instances of the messages
appended below.  Accesses to https://shib.cac.washington.edu/ fail.

Is there some reason other than not-getting-to-it not to give more
detailed instructions for the startup commands below?

I suppose some people would be using stock Apache (apachectl?) and some
RedHat-style (/etc/init.d/httpd), but it would certainly help me to have
an example of the latter.

Also, as long as I'm complaining, the beta tarball contains 1.5M of
shire.log file in /opt/shibboleth/etc/shibboleth, and also the shar.crt
and shar.key from I guess an Internet2 box.
