Hi Bob,

If you are running tomcat behind apache, then you probably don't want to 
run it as root.  All you should need to do in order to make this happen is:

1.  Give the user you intend to run under write permissions to the 
following directories and their contents: "conf", "work", and "logs".
2.  Make sure that tomcat isn't configured to use any ports under 1025.
