Yep - given read perms to httpd.pid fixed the issue.

We have a strict umask and once I added read permissions to the .pid files, the other showed as running. There are no extra steps, I think there was just a misunderstanding about the problems you were seeing. As for esmond, it actually just checks if httpd is running since it does not have its own process, so probably you need to make the same change to httpd.pid as you did the others. Hopefully that clears up the last of the issues you are seeing.
