I don't think it sounds stupid, especially if you wanted to use OWAMP to monitor for loss on the backhaul between the WAP and your wired infrastructure. I've seen the wired link between the WAP and the first-hop switch get saturated in some circumstances, and it does Very Bad Things to wireless as you might expect.
I'd be hesitant to use bwctl tests very often, just because it would be much easier to cause saturation.
