Doesn't really sound stupid. There are numerous places where such things are done. Our wireless guys do ndt (web100clt) tests from OpenWRT nodes. If you are using the ps Network Performance Toolkit, it's CENTOS based, so practically any wireless NIC should work. (practically in bold/italics).
