Yes, this makes senses.
At the server side, I don't know if Symlink can help you.

For example:
Most of the time with have:

software-A-1.1.tar.gz
software-A-1.2.tar.gz
software-A-1.3.tar.gz
software-A-1.4.tar.gz
...
Software to install (so the one that has to be fetched by the script) is 
referenced as software-A(in the script) and is a symlink to on occurence 
version of the software. (At server side)

software-A -> software-A-1.4.tar.gz
So the client always fetch the package you want ...
...

Just my 2 cents suggestion...
