Hi folks,

Although I've not been too much active for quite a while, could I still
wholeheartedly support using Jabber? In fact, I've been using it myself
for years now (not much contacts, though, unlike e.g. ICQ or MSNM.)

One thing I'm not quite certain: are different servers interconnected?
That is, as my account is on jabber.org (see my sig,) could I still
communicate with people from e.g. damsl.cis.udel.edu?

Yes, if you are on Google Talk right now you can add folks on the Internet2 or DAMSL servers to your buddy list.

One other thing worth adding is the benefit of running a private server vs using a public installation like Google Talk. One of our original reasons was to be able to create and manage our own chat rooms and logging. This is not really an option when you use someone else's equipment.

Sorry if the question is stupid. I guess I'm just lazy to read a bit
more about how the protocol is implemented. :(

Thanks,

Hi all,

during the current Drawing Conclusions meeting here in Cambridge we discussed that Skype is very helpful also for textual chats, but also that it is "considered evil".
Since quite a while we have a flexible alternative: A Jabber server. Find all the important information here:

The information is perhaps a little bit out dated. But Jabber/XMPP is quite common today, so you know most likely what to do and which client to use.
There is for example one company using it: http://www.google.com/talk/
Perhaps you already know this company ;)
