In the following link, a strategy for logging is presented:

It considers two things:
- logs are used on the recurrent monitoring (resource layer)
- logs are used to report errors during execution of a message request

Referring to frequency of checks, it should be a configurable value. 
Default value could be every 30 minutes or hour. It is very dependent on 
the service it is being run. E.g.: ls may be monitored more frequently 
once it is more critical, while RRD-MA may be monitored once or twice a day.

Well, this is a starting point for progressing in this activity.
