Hi Loukik,

This is based on my desire to reduce everything to
a simple time-series regardless of whether it is a
series of active measurements, passive measurements
or the EUR/USD exchange rate. (Actually, I'd rather not
see that last one... :-)
Hoping that I understood your statements correctly, I think it depends on what the users are looking for. As a user, you would probably be happy with graphs showing the way utilisation has changed (?). However, there are certainly other users who want to know the actual value and how saturated the links are.

I don't want to belabor this point, because I'm not really
advocating complete anarchy here. I'm just saying that
the numbers that are graphed are graphed the same way
regardless of whether they are bits or bytes and that the
units can (in many cases) simply be copied. Then the
user knows whether it was bits or bytes, but the UI
doesn't really care (and can adapt to new metrics with
minimal/no effort.)

For derived metrics and automatic alarms, this becomes
more difficult. Again, I'm not advocating that we ignore
this issue, just that we carefully identify when it really is
an issue.

best,
martin
