That is considered out the scope of the specification. That said, one of the most common ways to solve this problem is to have some sort of mechanism where by the SP would make calls back to the IdP indicating that a particular session was still in use. This is usually done by loading an image, either a transparent gif if you don't want it seen or something indicating you're logged in via the "federation".
