Subject: Re: communication to Internet2 membership

Hi Jason, All;

Below is a stab at a revised communication which Ana could send to her
international contacts to drum up additional RI contacts and resources
internationally. All, let me know by COB tomorrow if you have edit
suggestions and we'll get this sent on to Ana.

Dear ......

Members of the Internet2 K20 Initiative
http://k20.internet2.edu/internet2 recently formed a working group to
explore how remote instruments and data visualization tools are being
used both within the Internet2 community and its' international
partner organizations. In coming weeks, working group team members
will be reaching out to investigators who are using remotely
accessible telescopes, microscopes, sensory arrays, web cameras and
ROVs, and various data visualization tools to better understand how
these tools are currently being used and whether opportunities exist
to extend access to Internet2-enabled K-20 institutions in a mutually
beneficial and sustainable manner.

An example of a successful outreach effort includes Lehigh
University's Imaginations Project which provides middle and high
school students live remote access to a research quality, near-nano
scale Microscopy lab. This virtual lab includes full control of a
Scanning Electron Microscope, an Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer,
an Infra-red chamber camera to monitor the specimens, and simultaneous
video conferencing with researchers and scope technicians assisting at
Lehigh. Another successful program is the Southern Skies Digital
Science Partnership, a collaborative project between the University of
Louisville, and the University of Southern Queensland which is making
access to remotely operated telescopes at Mt. Kent Observatory in
Queensland, Australia, and Moore Observatory in Kentucky available to
K-20 audiences within the advanced research and education network
community in the United States and Australia.

To learn more about the activities of this newly formed working group,
please visit:

If you or a colleague have an interest in speaking to this group about
remote instrumentation and data visualization resources in your
country or region please let me and I will make the appropriate
introductions.

Sincerely,
Ana Preston
