INTERNET2 QUALITY OF SERVICE WORKSHOP TO HIGHLIGHT PROGRESS AND PROSPECTS OF
ADVANCED INTERNET TECHNOLOGY

February 8, 2000--Washington, D.C.--Over 150 leaders in advanced network
engineering will meet this week to discuss the development and deployment of
new Internet quality of service (QoS) technologies. The First Joint
Internet2(tm)/U.S. Department of Energy QoS Workshop will be held 9-10
February at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. The workshop will
also be available via live, near-TV-quality video as an Internet2 Multicast.

Members of the Internet2 project have focused on implementing and testing
QoS strategies based on the Internet Engineering Task Force's differentiated
services architecture (DiffServ) to engineer scalable interdomain QoS
services in support of advanced network applications. Since the last
Internet2 QoS Workshop held in May 1998, several key components of the QoS
architecture outlined by the Internet2 QBone initiative, launched in
November 1998, have been developed and tested by Internet2 members working
with partners in industry and government.

This week's workshop will take stock of the progress that has been made
toward realizing Internet2 QoS goals, characterize the challenges that lay
ahead, and increase understanding of how recent QoS research and standards
work might be leveraged to accelerate the development of production QoS
services throughout Internet2 networks and emerging next generation internet
(NGI) infrastructure.

The First Joint Internet2/U.S. Department of Energy QoS Workshop is
sponsored by the Texas GigaPoP and is made possible through a cooperative
agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy.

About Internet2(tm)
Internet2 is led by over 170 universities working in partnership with
industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications
and technologies for research and education, accelerating the creation of
tomorrow's Internet. For more information about Internet2, see:

Press Release, Prague, February 11, 2000

2.5 Gbps Technology Implemented in the Czech National Research Network
TEN-155 CZ

The TEN-155 CZ Czech National Research Network, operated by CESNET,
started using a new optical data link at a capacity of 2.5 Gbps in
January 2000. This link between the two most important TEN-155 CZ backbone
nodes, Prague and Brno, has been set up in co-operation with MERO CR, a.s.
It will be used for the TCP/IP traffic only.
Features and parameters of this new network technology are being tested;
CESNET expects this test phase to finish within the second quarter of 2000.
>From the network topology point of view, this new data link based on the
Packet over SONET technology is installed in parallel to the current 155
Mbps ATM backbone link which connects two central points of the twin-star
TEN-155 CZ topology.
The 2.5 Gbps link interconnects two CISCO 12000 Gigaswitch routers with
OC-48 cards. Three signal regenerators are necessary for the 320 kilometre
long optical line.
By putting this 2.5 Gbps link into operation, the TEN-155 CZ became one of
several European National Research Networks using these high-capacity links.

CESNET z. s. p. o. (Association of Legal Entities) was established
in March 1996 as an association of all Czech Universities and
the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic to build and operate
the Czech National Research Network. Nowadays, CESNET is operating
the TEN-155 CZ backbone network which connects nine Points of
Presence with ATM 34 Mbps and 155 Mbps links.

CESNET is a member of the QUANTUM project consortium which operates
and develops the TEN-155 backbone network interconnecting various
European National Research Networks. Further development of this
pan-european infrastructure is planned within the new European Commission
supported project which should supersede the QUANTUM project.

The co-operation between CESNET and U. S. research networks started
in October 1999 after the Memorandum of Understanding between CESNET
and UCAID (University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development)
was signed.
