Thanks, Steve. That was probably it.  Meanwhile, I razed my Grouper install 
to the ground and reinstalled from scratch and I'm back in the swing of 
things.  I'll try your approach if it happens again.

I haven't found a "Beginner's Guide to Managing Your Grouper Installation" 
that covers things like this.  If it doesn't exist it would be worth creating 
(if only someone had the time   =)
