I really appreciate the extra effort you're putting into this. That should substantially shorten the time it'll take to resolve and fix whatever's the problem.

statements to the code and build a new jar. Does that sound
interesting ?

I cranked up the postgresql logging and do see it making some group queries before failing. The log terminates with an "unexpected EOF on client connection" error. But up until then, the queries all seem similar to the successful run just prior. I'll run it to failure again and check to see if it's failing on the same select or not (I suspect not, though). I should have those results tomorrow, unless it obliges me by failing sooner. :)

In the meantime, I'll start looking at good places to add log statements to the code. I was leaving that as a last resort, but I think I've reached that point. I'll report back what I find.
