By lots do you mean 100s, 1000s or 10000s?
Say 10,000-30,000 groups and 100,000s of members.

At Memphis, twice a year we create ~7,000 course groups with ~90,000 members, and the process runs overnight. The runtime, however, is largely determined by the evaluation of our provisioning business-logic.
