Fun fact of the week:

 

Imagine bacteria that live without oxygen, like deep in mud, and breathe solid metal instead of air! These microbes, called Geobacter, use tiny, wire-like protein parts ("microbial nanowires") to pass electrical charges onto metals like iron or even toxic uranium. This helps them survive and can actually trap pollution. Scientists are now studying Geobacter to see if they can be used to clean up waste sites and even create electricity using bacteria-powered fuel cells.
