Pretty eye-opening that the SS7 part of the network would be that 
vulnerable (since most of us just assume it just keeps on working) ... 
we had rumors of possible SS7 failures when our local ILEC was sold, 
specifically at the critical date when full responsibility for all of 
the infrastructure was rolled from Verizon back into the local company.  
While the failure never materialized, there was lots of extra attention 
paid during the weeks leading up to the cutover event by both the ILEC 
as well as ALL the other carriers in town.
