BoF: Optical IP Technical Working Group

Dear Colleagues,

During the Internet2 Member Meeting in Los Angeles on Sunday, October 27 (2:00-3:30p PDT), we will hold Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) session to consider the formation of *technical* WG focused on the pragmatic interface of IP and optronics. This BoF will consider the formation of an Optical IP technical working group within Internet2. While many in the community have focused most recently on procurement and deployment strategies for optical networks, we contend that it is now appropriate to evaluate the potential approaches for integrating the IP and optical layers from both the engineering and operational standpoints. To date, the telecommunication carriers have focused their efforts in this space on GMPLS. Several years ago when optical switching was viewed in a more 'exuberant' and free-standing light, our Canadian colleagues proposed the Optical BGP concept. Now optical switches have become less complex and better integrated with transport systems. As our community soon could have access to multiple DWDM channels in regional and potentially national facilities, we propose to evaluate the evolving interface between IP and optronics systems and to discuss potential control plane strategies.

We hope that you and/or technical leads can join us in our discussion in Los Angeles.
