I believe that the salient issue is that Universities will soon lose the
ability to cost recover voice service in the same way they are accustomed
to. Departmental scale VoIP is inexpensive to implement and many departments
will choose to do this in the same way that departments implement their own
web servers today. So Universities are going to have fold voice into their
'free' category of offerings like email. This will cause a shuft in the
business model that CIOs will have to deal with. I believe most will choose
to offer voice for free, or almost free, and charge for the network itself.
PBX based services will no longer be economically viable.

For that reason, we need a good understanding of how these systems work,
because we will need to provide the service. We just won't make any money at
it.

Further, I believe 'telephone emulation' is not what will develop, but
instead a more rich environment including video and web-based linking of
data to video/voice applications will prevail.
