*Discussion*
The group discussed what to include in stage one of the PIC.edu project. There
was general agreement on:
- choosing a single XMPP server to work with. Rodney noted that MAMS has
already
Shibbolized jabberd 1.4, but suggested that OpenFire would be a better choice
for PIC.edu.
- a list of recommended XMPP clients. Ben suggested that we pick a single
client
to test and document extensively, then test and document several others as
time
allows.
- basing the effort on a cookbook. There may be a packaged offering also, but
detailed how-to documentation will be the core of the effort.
- not including federated authentication in stage one, but making sure that we
don't do anything that would prevent us from adding it in stage two.
- more generally, including the ability to support the stage-two features that
we know we'll want, in the stage-one feature list.
[ACTION] Tim will draft a feature list for stage one of the PIC.edu project
for
discussion on the November 1 call. [ACTION] Tim will ask SIP.edu participants
for their insights on how to proceed with PIC.edu.
There was also general agreement that, when we do add federated
authentication,
we should make as much use as possible of existing work in this area. Rodney
provided several links:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/shibjim
http://www.open-ils.org/
http://open-ils.org/blog/?p=36
http://wwwlib.murdoch.edu.au/help/ask/
http://www.federation.org.au/software/minigrant2/MurdochProjPlanAug06.pdf
Rodney noted that eduRoam uses RADIUS for federated authentication; the group
could consider using that instead of Shibboleth.
The group discussed finding project resources; Jorj, Tim, and Rodney all know
people who may be able to help.
