Thanks for the comments, Steve.
At this point we're not promising integration with site specific applications (LDAP, location aggration, calendar, portals). But under #7 below we will make recommendations and probably eagerly pursue them as time permits.
You're right - we do need to make sure that database backup and recovery is a part of the installation package for module updates. This should be easy to do because I think that after the initial installation we will only be releasing PA module updates, but I could be wrong.

Internet 2 PIC-WG Call for Participation (draft) Spring, 2005
PIC-SER server package beta test
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Presence and Integrated Communications (PIC) Working Group members are pleased to announce an opportunity for participation in their PIC-SER package beta test. The PIC-SER package consists of a open source (iptel.org SIP Express Router), standards-based (SIP/SIMPLE) server application, the server installation and configuration script, documentation, and trial use of pre-tested software phone clients for both PC and Mac platforms. The goal of the PIC-SER package is to make it easier to enable presence services in member campuses and institutions and to solicit further input on the direction of working group research.
integration with site specific applications with this package? LDAP for provisioning
keeps coming to mind but not for any good reason.
This is a limited call for participation that will be announced at the Internet2 Spring Member Meeting. Please reply by May 31, 2005.Given that SER updates usually include background changes like MySQL table
Participation will be granted to member campuses and institutions that meet the following criteria:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Submit a brief project timeline of 60 days to install, configure, and deploy the service, with a note of support from your organization's CIO or department head, and the name of at least one full time employee that can assume responsibility for the project
2. Equipment - Linux server running version 7.3 or newer, a group of testers running Windows 2K/XP or Mac OS 10+ machines with headset and microphone capability
3. Willingness to share experiences with the Internet2 community
The PIC working group will provide:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Packaged PIC-SER server application with installation/configuration script
2. Configuration worksheet and Wiki reference
3. Email-based support via
4. Trial use of one of three pre-tested software phone clients
5. Administrator and user manuals for server and software user agent configuration and troubleshooting
6. Periodic releases of updated SER/PA beta modules
changes do we need to do anything special to prepare the users for backing up,
rebuilding the tables then reloading their data?
7. Suggestions for extending PIC-SER with other emerging communications technologies such as automatic location services and application integration with calendars and portals
I'm interested in user driven provisioning tools and location services capable of
determining the location of wired and wireless clients (handsets) which register
to the proxy.
