The easiest thing we have found so far is to query all the switches and
ask them what multicast groups are in use. We happen to have HP
switches in all our buildings and grab the multicast info from SNMP but
I assume any managed switch could do the same.

We have Cisco switches, and this is how we've been doing it as well. Our
multicast TV distribution system also collects client-level stats via a
unicast control channel back to the license server.
