Dear Alan, Joe;

Yes, the encoder has to do nothing - however, the multicast should be sent
out using RTP, and unicast streams frequently are not. (Apple streaming server
sends out unicat with Quicktime wrappers, for example, which != RTP for
MPEG-2.)

If the unicast is RTP, the rtptrans can easy change the IP address to the
group
address.

If the unicast is not, I would suggest a vBrick or NCast unit - receive the
unicast and feed it into the box.

Ask the vendor if they support RTP - then it's just another stream with a
Class D address.

Hi,
We're talking to a vendor who can encode video into a high quality IP
MPEG-2 unicast stream (single box codec with Ethernet as the output).
Does anyone know of a commercial product that can take unicast streams
and convert them to multicast. Their product do this costs quite a bit
and we're looking for alternatives.

Thanks,
Joe

You just make the destination IP address one in the multicast range.
There's absolutely nothing the *encoder* has to do to do multicast.
