For this event we did today, we had upwards of 300 simultaneous real
viewers out of about 1058 unique IPs. Of those, 708 were on my campus
and capable of viewing the multicast (only 65 did in fact view the
MPEG1 multicast). Another 116 real viewers were on Columbia campuses
that *should* be multicast enabled but are not (yet). Of the 234
"remote" (non-Columbia) viewers a large percentage are I2 member sites
that could have been using multicast followed by the usual cable modem
and DSL suspects who I'm sure many of are in our neighborhood. (Does
anyone already have a script lying around to take a list of IPs and
find out what ASNs they are in?)

I suspect the 65 MPEG1 viewers is largely attributable to the fact
that we had a .sdp file link as well as a .ipt file so that Quicktime
6 viewers could watch. Very few people seem to go through the trouble
of installing IPTV viewer.... Looking at the http access log, it's
5-to-1 .sdp vs. .ipt and also about 5-to-1 Windows vs. Mac Quicktime.
And, I've found the Windows quicktime playback of RTP MPEG1 to be far
inferior to IPTVs.

We haven't tried using Real's "scalable multicast" features.... (or
ASM just yet).
