Sparse-dense mode is implemted (to my knowledge) only by Cisco.
I agree with Marshall: use BSR instead of auto-rp. Then run everything sparse-mode only.
In my experience, 12.0(10) was the version that fixed the last bad multicast operational bug, so your IOS should work fine.
