Well, we got a lot of responses about the multicast button applet.
We have made a few changes, and the latest from Marty is attached below.
The tester is still at
http://www.multicasttech.com/mt/
The biggest change is that the applet now listens to the AccessGrid / NLANR
beacon group -
if ANY group traffic is received from any source, the applet announces
success.
This seemed to be a better measure of general multicast enablement.
BUT, as Marty points out here
http://www.multicasttech.com/mt/howto.html
it is easy to configure the tester to use any desired group - the IETF
broadcasts could
set up a connectivity page (for example) that uses the IETF multicasts, for
example, to
decide connectivity.
As always, suggestions, comments, etc., are welcomed.

First thank you all for helping us improve the Multicast Tester applet.
Several of you had common questions and problems so allow me to
comment on them.
There already exists many admin level tools for tracking
down multicast problems. It is important to remember that this
was meant to be an easy to use, end user tool. For example, if
you are hosting a multicast event, from your web site you can
provide users an easy way to check their ability to receive your
multicast sources.
The original version of this applet listened for multicast traffic
coming from one specific source. This can be useful, but a more
general tool should listen to a group with a distributed set of
sources. We have now updated the software to listen in on the
NLANR Multicast Beacon traffic. I encourage everyone to try
the applet again and see if the results improve.
Also, we have drafted a document describing how you can incorporate
this tool into your web site. The applet was designed to allow
customization of the group/port used for testing. We hope people
will find this a useful way to determine who can receive their
multicast sources. This document can be found at
http://www.multicasttech.com/mt/howto.html
I would also like to remind everyone that this is an open source
project, and we encourage people to help us improve the code.
Feel free to send me suggestions, comments, and more debug reports.
