Draft Notes from 7/15/04 SIP.edu Conference Call

Dennis Baron, MIT
Jeremy George, Yale
Walt Magnussen, Texas A&M
Ben Teitelbaum, Internet2
Doug Walsten, Cisco
Garret Yoshimi, Hawaii

Internet2 RTC group discussions - Dennis Baron, MIT; Ben Teitelbaum, Internet2
- adhoc report in final drafts
- will be submitted to for Applications Strategy Council
- will also go to the Network Planning and Policy Advisory Council as a FYI
- proposes a preliminary unifying architecture for RTC
- proposes a coordinating group similar to the MACE middleware group
- recommends that SIP.edu become a separate Working Group
- Dennis will prepare a draft WG charter for review and comment

CODEC testing with Cisco Gateways - Dennis Baron, MIT
- Background
- Internet2 PIC demos have been recommending low bit rate, loss/jitter
tolerant CODECs for use on wireless networks
- GSM testing uncovered compatibility issues with Cisco gateways used
in SIP.edu implementations - GSM is negotiated properly but fails
- iLBC will be the preferred CODEC for the next PIC demo - iLBC is not
supported by Cisco gateways but lower preference CODECs are successfully
negotiated
- MIT submitted a TAC case with Cisco. TAC recommended changing to "high
complexity" mode for CODECs. Downside is that you loose half of your
channel capacity in this mode unless you buy more DSPs
- Dennis will run tests with Jeremy using the Yale gateway
- Discussion of whether SIP.edu should advocate for CODEC support with
vendors - eg. support for iLBC
- Texas A&M ITEC has done CODEC evaluation (G.711, G.722, GIPS) using Cisco,
Pingtel and Siemens phones under packet loss conditions - white paper
should be available soon - will test iLBC when lab is set back up (Walt)
- Cisco would have concerns about iLBC code being encumbered - is under
IETF so should be OK
- CODEC support will become more of an issue with the growth in popularity
of soft clients and mobile clients (802.11)

VoIP Workshop at Fall Member Meeting - Walt Magnussen, Texas A&M
- Would like to spend 3-4 hours doing hands-on SIP implementation
- Texas A&M would provide support staff and equipment
- Use an open source proxy implementation - or several?
- UAs and gateway would be available for testing
- Maybe LDAP directory and DNS SRV for complete system
- Could we use the list of meeting attendees to populate the directory?
(Ben)
- Another session will be on testing - packet loss, latency, and jitter
- Program committee has been identified but has not met

Other items
- Walt is now on the SIP Foundry board - will send announcement to the
list about the VoIP developers workshop associated with the TMC conference
in August
- Ben has been talking to Pulver about co-scheduling a SIP.edu workshop at
the fall VON conference - would only be 1/2 day or full day at most. Ben
will send an inquiry to the list to see whether this is of interest
