8:45 AM - 10:00 AM The Big Picture for Internet2 Middleware (netcast)

1:15 PM - 2:30 PM Federations

Peter Alterman , National Institutes of Health, Federal CIO Council
Thomas Lenggenhager , SWITCH
David Wasley , (Retired) University of California Office of the President

Federations are proving to be an effective and scaleable approach to managing policy, trust, and technical issues for large numbers of members with common requirements. They are also emerging as forums where common solutions and approaches can be developed. This session will review the current state of Higher Ed/Research Federations around the world, and describe some recent examples of cooperation. European national federations are working together on common approaches to commercial information providers. And the Federal E-Authentication Federation has used their User Group to identify and explore common problems.

4:15 PM - 5:30 PM Managing Middleware Environments (Netcast)

Steven Carmody , Brown University
Walter Hoehn , University of Memphis
Neil Witheridge , Macquarie University

Two new tools, Nexus and SHARPE, enrich campus identity management environments. Nexus, produced by the Univ.of Memphis and the Internet2 Middleware Initiative, provides seemless and appropriate access to all enterprise resources by automatically creating and managing identity and privilege information across multiple directory, database, and authentication systems. Shibboleth is a Federated Single Signon solution; many campuses also use it as an intra-campus SSO solution. SHARPE is a web-based GUI developed by the Australian MAMS project for managing Shibboleth Attribute Release Policies (ARPs). In this session we'll describe both both the Nexus and SHARPE products, emphasizing how they can integrate into a campus identity management infrastructure, and demonstrate the SHARPE management GUI.
