Well, that's what the metadata generator does right now. You type in
a fully qualified hostname and everything else is provisioned from
that (Scope, KeyName, Location, etc.).
Yeah, I think I argued that people really wouldn't understand what scoping meant so asking for a domain was usually a waste of time. We were correcting a lot of them in InQueue for a while.
In OSU's case, the hostnames and attribute scope don't even have the same domain, so it's just ultimately impossible to reliably guess any of this stuff.
People want to install it with no understanding of the technology (that's what "works out of the box" means), and that just leads to compromises. Documentation is the excuse, but we could have books up the wazoo, wouldn't get people to read them until long after they first try it.
