I can't comment on your proposal, Chad, since I don't yet fully
understand how the attribute exchange currently works with an apache
frontend. I can see from the IdP code that client authentication
depends on the request attribute

javax.servlet.request.X509Certificate

Does the apache-tomcat connector populate this attribute?
