I don't see a return from child_init, so unless there's an API call, it might 
be from the actual init hook. I've never used it, due
to the multi-process morass, since it's not the global init that we're 
worried about.

I suppose we could init globally too, theorizing that the children won't work 
if the main process init calls fail.
