While I notice that the Docker image has been recently updated ( https://hub.docker.com/r/perfsonar/testpoint ), I believe having an official VM image would be a valuable addition to the existing deployment options.
If you’ve been around perfSONAR awhile, you might remember that we used to ship an ISO image. That was, in part, because of an application we used to support required a custom kernel and the whole thing was easier to install from an ISO rather than supporting the custom kernel across multiple distributions. Both the application and custom kernel went away and, after shipping the ISO for five years without it, we figured out that the number of local customizations people were doing didn’t make it much of a time-saver for anyone involved.
I’ve done a couple of perfSONAR VM images for my own use and suspect releasing one might go the same way. There’s a pretty wide variety of VM environments in use, which adds complexity. For your use case, mass re-imaging machines, I think it makes sense because the environment for your systems is consistent.
The container only runs in one environment that pushes all of the configuration to the outside and doesn’t require site-specific customizations.
