Two-day Online Mini-Workshop on Science DMZs and P4-DPDK

This free hands-on workshop provides IT professionals and educators with an introduction to Science Demilitarized Zones (DMZs) and P4 Data Plane Development Kit (P4-DPDK).

Day 1 – Tuesday August 6

Day 1 will discuss Science DMZ fundamentals, including:

·       TCP congestion controls (e.g., CUBIC, BBRv3); impact of packet losses and RTT

·       BGP routing fundamentals and attributes (e.g., local preference, AS_PATH)

·       perfSONAR network tool; measuring and visualizing end-to-end performance

·       Lab 1: Hot potato routing and BGP local preference

·       Lab 2: Visualizing pScheduler measurements with Grafana

·       Lab 3: Enabling large data transfers across a Science DMZ

Day 2 – Thursday August 8

Day 2 will discuss P4-DPDK and its advantages to process packets in the user space. P4-DPDK accelerates packet processing using in-kernel and kernel-bypass technologies. Topics include:

·       Fundamentals of P4 and DPDK

·       P4-DPDK

·       Portable Network Interface Card (NIC) architecture (PNA)

·       Lab 1: P4 / DPDK programming

·       Lab 2: PNA match-action tables

Audience

IT practitioners, educators, and professionals in general (network engineers, system administrators, etc.) with basic background in computer networks.

Required Equipment

No specialized equipment is required. Material will be accessible via web browsing. Presentations will be conducted via Zoom. For hands-on sessions, attendees will access a virtual platform deployed for the workshop.
