Hi Phil,
What you describe of finding the sites and then struggling to find ones that allow your tests through or are in a good state is unfortunately something we’ve struggled with for as long as I can remember. Over the years we’ve added fields that allow people to indicate their access policy, but its sparsely used and far from being expressive enough in many cases even if it was. As far as hosts being degraded, I won’t say that some bugs that were introduced in 5.X are completely blameless, but if you look at many of the meshes they have been in a bad state well before then. So a few things we’ve been doing recently to help make things better:
- We’ve started holding quarterly office hours to help people with issues. Next one is May 3rd and encourage people to attend if they haven’t. I think you were at the last one Phil, using this as a chance to plug it for others who may not have been :)
- We’ve been holding regular meetings with some of the larger deployments to help debug issues. This has directly led to some of the bug fix releases, but also has highlighted a number of non-software related issues that are specific to individual deployments.
- We’ve got a 5.1.0 beta being announced early next week. We’ve added tools like a “psarchive troubleshoot” command, added some features to “pscheduler troubleshoot” and have a lot more instrumentation of the pS node itself that will hopefully help pinpoint problems in future.
- We’ve got a user survey we are going to open in a couple weeks, so encourage people to fill that out and give us honest feedback about their pain points or ideas in this space.
None of that helps you in the short-term unfortunately. Best I can do is if any of the places along the path giving you troubles were ESnet hosts, let me know and I can help.
Thanks,
Andy

Hi,
I'm setting up a new perfSONAR box at the edge of our net. I was
looking for remote sites to test against. Easy-peasy, just visit the
Global Node Directory, scroll through the long list till you find a
place where you'd like to test to, add it as a host for your tests and
off you go.
At least that was the way it used to be.
Now I've found it very difficult to find a 'live' site, and worse, the
ones I find seem to be restricted and my U's IPs don't make the cut.
There must be a better way to find a host to test against, somewhere
along a national path you are checking for congestion.
Any help using the tool or other suggestions appreciated!
Phil
