Having seen a mixture of 403 Forbidden, 500 read timeout and 500 Internal Error, I wonder if there is a problem at ps-sls.sanren.ac.za ?

Can you verify network connection to this host work properly? Any loses on the path?

The path from Kenya to South Africa is heavily congested for much of the day. The assumption that a geographically nearby node is the best choice doesn't always hold :-(

You may try setting another LS explicitly as ls_instance field ls_registration_daemon.conf (choose other from http://ps-west.es.net:8096/lookup/activehosts.json)
Then restart the deamon
