Does the ssh login prompt query the lookup service as well?

We're looking to upgrade our internal 35 or so nodes across the state to 3.4
and were looking at running an internal lookup service for our state wide
measurement setup. This has been very helpful in holding vendors
accountable. Has there been any new documentation on an internal lookup
service?

For Border, Science DMZ, and other research spots, we will have public IPs
and operate normally.
