Hi Luis, All,
I think this supports my argument. The best we can hope for is to be
descriptive (as opposed to prescriptive.) So, FCCN can express that
in a "Units" parameter. We still need to decide on "b/s" vs "bit/s", "bits/s",
"bps" etc. Then an MA can decide whether to implement a "bit/s" to "B/s"
transformation (or vice-versa) or not.
best,
martin

P.S.
I don't really understand why anyone would be putting
anything other than
octets(bytes) in the RRD files. The SNMP MIB variable is in
octets - why mess
with it? Can someone tell me what other units are being used
for utilization,
and what they are using to collect the data so that it ends
up in other units?
Hi Jeff.
Usually the utilization graphics are drawn in bits/s, even though the SNMP
MIB variable counters are in octets.
We, at FCCN, store utilization in bits/s on the RRDs. We have scripts that
collect the SNMP counters, do the necessary transformation to them, and then
store them in RRDs in bits/s. This way, when a user clicks on a link to see
a graphic, all the CGI that creates it has to do is to get the values stored
in the RRD. Otherwise, we would have to do the transformation at that time.
Regards,
