BTW. I would like to point out that there is no reason to use XML inside the key. It might make more sense to have the data inside a key be the most trivially serializable set of data for the specific language you are developing in. (For example JSON, or Java Properties...) By using XML here, you are forcing updates to the NMWG objects to support these things - and this really is an implementation specific feature.

Interesting idea. I think all depends on a certain service and its implementation. For example, in case of Java RRD MA (or SQL MA) the xml is very convenient: well-known, simple and also processing is easy.
