Maciej,

I see two parts in your reply. In part 1 you talk about other dependency software for pS services. In part 2, you talk about which OS we test on. I am currently trying to list out the Part 2 options that you are talking about.

We need to have a list of OS (with some details) on which we will test our pS software. This list has to be finite and should be applicable for and common across all the services. We will do benchmarking on just one of them and installation testing on all of them.

The OS (and hardware) which will have pS software performance benchmarks will be the recommended one (i.e. Red Hat linux Enterprise 4).

I hope I was clear.

Loukik.

Hi Loukik,

I think "recommended" OS is generaly wrong idea. Our requirements are Java, Ant, perl, Exist DB (LS/MA), rrdjtool (MA), etc.
all with specific versions.

Why can't we just write the list of "tested" OS-es and distributions?
For example:

- LookupService on Linux Slackware 10.1 with kernel 2.6.11, Java 1.5.0_02, Ant 1.6.5, eXist XML DB 1.0RC -- status tested, no problems
- LookupService on Linux Ubuntu 6.x with kernel 2.6.18, Java 1.5.0_11, Ant 1.6.5, eXist XML DB 1.1RC -- status tested, no problems

Hi Guys,

I would like to list out the details of the perfSONAR recommended Operating System so that if we are doing some benchmarking tests, we can say what we tested these on.

==== Recommended ====
For example, I already know that we recommend the following (although our development supports other OS which we will come to in the later section)
* Red Hat Enterprise Linux version - 4

The extra information that I need is:
* Patched up-to-date

Let me know if you think otherwise.

==== Other ====
For other OS flavors, I would also need more information (although I don't see us supplying benchmarks for these. Still, if we are going to at least say that pS will install and run on these, it would be helpful to come up with a specification so that we can test against these specifications)

* FreeBSD
** Version 6.1
** Patched up-to-date for that tree? (if that makes sense)

* Debian
** Version 3.1
** What about patches?

thanks,
Loukik
