Jason;

There are a couple of things you can try/do.

1) try running the NPToolkit ISO image in your VM.  I've been using the free VMware server package for some time now as a development environment.  You can download this ISO from the http://e2epi.internet2.edu/network-performance-toolkit.html web site.

2) to tell if the Web100 mods were successfully installed you can do the following:
a) ls /proc/web100  --  If this returns a file not found message, then you don't have the kernel patch installed
b) dmesg | grep -i web100  --  if this returns nothing, then you don't have the kernel patch installed

To install the kernel patch go to the network options section of the config menu and make sure there is an 'asteric' in the Web100 option.  THEN press the return key to get into the Web100 sub menu and enable the 3 functions you find there.  Just enabling the main menu item doesn't install the kernel patch.

If the kernel patch is installed correctly, then I'd look at the network side of things.  How do you have the VM client configured?  Is it using a bridged or NATed connection?  I use bridged connections so the VM client looks just like any other machine on the network.  If you use a NATed connection you will need to make sure the NDT client has a route to the VMware server IP so it will forward packets onto the VMware client.

Subject: NDT setup on Virtual box

I am trying to setup a trial run of NDT.  I have downloaded a virtual machine player from vmware, and have installed Ubuntu 7.10 Server for the VM player. I have followed directions for installing the Web100 patch and the kernel patch, and have installed NDT.  I have it setup and the website works with the correct Java Applete and all but when I push the start button it always says:

 Server Busy  please wait for 30 seconds, and the time goes to 45 seconds, 90 …etc when I push start again.

I have the ports 7123 and 3001 open for listening on my virtual box. It may be that the web100 patch is not fully operational on my machine because when I run ‘make menuconfig’ and look for “IP: Web100 networking enhancements” there is nothing in the file where there should be a couple of lines- I am kind of following the instructions for istalling NDT on the Ubuntu 7.10 Server from the howtoforge.com website.

Is there any way to check that the web100 patch is installed correctly and could this be the cause of the problem?

Also I am wondering if the Virtual operating system may be the problem?  It may not be acting as a normal operating system because I downloaded it from the vmware website, preconfigured.

Is there any way to check that the OS configuration is the problem?

If there is anything else that you know may be causing this problem please let me know.

Thank You for your help
