Hi Martyn;
The short answer is yes, you need to patch the kernel before the NDT package will work. AFAIK the kernel build instructions are generic enough that it doesn't matter what base linux distribution you start with. So yes, you can follow the Web100.org kernel build instructions.
Feel free to contact this group for help, and feedback on what changes you needed to make would be greatly appreciated.
