That's a very good question. That's what I had at first. I assumed that gcc  
would know what to do with those expressions (which is a huge leap in  
certain cases ;-)). I ended up with this version since I *thought* it  
looked cleaner, but I'm (obviously) okay with either way. Just say the word  
and I'll make the change.
