Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the Governance and Nominations Committee (GNC), it is my pleasure to announce that nominations are now open for candidates to serve on the new Advisory Councils defined by the GNC’s final report.  One of the primary recommendations of the GNC was to replace the existing Internet2 Advisory Council structure with four new Councils that are heterogeneous, defined by operational function and more tightly connected to the membership, to management, and to the Board.  As you know, Tracy Futhey and I have announced our plan to bring Internet2 and NLR together into a single organization, and that plan includes a commitment to adopt the GNC governance structure.  Therefore, it is expected that once the Definitive Agreement is signed, the four Advisory Councils will be Internet2-NLR Advisory Councils.  As indicated in our joint announcement, a 21-person Board will be appointed to guide the merged organization through June, 2009, at which point the GNC recommendations for Board elections will be effective.

Beginning now through May 7, 2007, the GNC is seeking individuals to serve on the following new Councils:

Architecture & Operations Advisory Council (AOAC)
Applications, Middleware & Services Advisory Council (AMSAC)
Research Advisory Council (RAC)
External Relations Advisory Council (ERAC)

Each Council has three seats from each of these constituency groups:

CIO Representatives
Regional Network Representatives
Researcher Representatives
Industry Representatives

Individuals from current Internet2 members are eligible to be nominated for these constituency seats.  Nominations can be submitted by anyone regardless of their own Internet2 affiliation.  Self-nominations are welcome. Candidates can be nominated for one or more of the councils and may also be nominated in one or more constituency category.

In addition to the constituency seats, each council also includes 3 slots to be appointed by the Board in accord with the recommendations set forth in the GNC final report.  Experienced individuals from non-member organizations that could be considered for appointment to a Council may be nominated as such.  Additional seats will be added to each Council by the NLR Board through a process of their choosing.

As a one-time occurrence and to ensure a smooth transition to the new Councils, eligible and interested members of the existing Internet2 Advisory Councils may be assigned to the new Councils for one, two or three-year terms.  The GNC is committed to holding open at least one seat in each constituency group on each Council for this first election.

Additional information on the Councils and the nominations and elections process, including a link to the nominations form and FAQ, can be found at http://www.internet2.edu/about/governance/nominations.html.

Please circulate this announcement to all interested parties. Nominations must be received by Monday, May 7, 2007.

Thank you for your contributions to launching this new governance structure!

Best regards,
[]
