The following Calls have been distributed for the Fall 2004 Internet2 Member
Meeting, scheduled for September 27-30 in Austin, Texas:

+ Call for Proposals – Deadline Extended!
The Fall 2004 Member Meeting Program Committee is now accepting proposals
for concurrent sessions at the 2004 Fall Member Meeting in Austin, Texas,
27-30 September 2004. Members are encouraged to circulate this Call to
others on campus, in their organization, and elsewhere within the Internet2
member community. The deadline is 7 June 2004.

+ Call for Demos – Deadline Extended!
Internet2 university members, corporate members, affiliate members, working
groups, international partners, and ITECs are all invited to participate in
the demos. Applications from all disciplines are welcome. The primary
objective is to showcase network-intensive applications that demonstrate the
reality and the potential of Internet2 environments. We're also interested
in selecting several demos that can be presented during Member Meeting track
sessions. The deadline is 11 June 2004.

+ Call for Posters Announced
All Internet2 members and international MoU partners are invited to submit
proposals for poster sessions at the Fall 2004 Member Meeting.  Poster
sessions are a purposely low-tech forum for the exchange of information and
ideas about collaborations, projects and works-in-progress. Stories are
conveyed by the use of graphs, diagrams, pictures, data, and narrative
text--all displayed on ~4' x 3' corkboard. Participants discuss their
presentations informally with meeting attendees.  Each poster session
proposal must contain the title, organization name, brief abstract, and
contact name and email address.  Send submissions to

+ Call for Sponsors
Internet2 is seeking sponsorship contributions for several Fall Member
Meeting activities. Sponsors are needed for three evening events: the
international reception, which will be held at the hotel the evening of 26
September; the welcome reception, also at the hotel the evening of 27
September; and the gala reception on 28 September, location to be
determined.  Sponsors will be acknowledged via signage at the event site, in
the published meeting program, and on the meeting web site.  We are open to
suggestions regarding other ways to acknowledge generous support.  For more

+ Corporate Perspectives Forum
All Internet2 corporate members are invited to submit proposals for
presentations in the Corporate Perspectives Forum to showcase engagement
with the Internet2 community.  The session format is at the discretion of
the presenter.  Expected formats include: briefings, informal discussions,
case studies, product/technology directions and customer feedback sessions.
A $200 fee will be charged to cover costs associated with these
presentations.  Proposals must contain the title; organization name; brief
abstract; presenter name, title, and email address; and a contact name and
email address.  Send proposals to

<> Internet2 Workshops
+ First SIP.edu Implementors Workshop, 16 June
The Internet2 SIP.edu project is promoting the convergence of voice and
email identities, is growing SIP-reachability within Internet2, and is
building a community of Internet2 schools that are developing and deploying
campus SIP services.  In one year, the project has extended SIP reachability
to nearly 100,000 users at four universities, attracted corporate
sponsorship, and published a "cookbook" to lower the implementation hurdle
for others.  The goals for the First SIP.edu Implementors workshop are to
build a knowledge base for organizations interested in deploying SIP.edu;
investigate areas that the SIP.edu community should pursue in order to
leverage SIP as a core technology for new communications services and
collaboration applications; expand the leadership group for SIP.edu; and
chart a course for scaling up SIP service deployment. The workshop will be
hosted by University of Pennsylvania and takes place in Philadelphia, PA.

+ CAMP Shibboleth Implementation Workshop, 28-30 June
The CAMP Shibboleth Implementation Workshop provides CIOs, IT architects,
directors, technical librarians, technical staff, and others concerned with
sharing resources among institutions the opportunity to come together to
discuss the planning, policy, and federation requirements associated with
implementing Shibboleth, as well as the technical specifics of deploying it.

+ Advanced CAMP Authority Architectures Workshop, 30 June-2 July
The Advanced CAMP Authority Architectures Workshop provides IT architects
with the opportunity to discuss the development of campus and interrealm
authority architectures and related systems. Topics include work in
privilege management systems and Grouper, an architecture and suite of tools
to manage groups across applications and user communities. Additional
sessions will consider policy decision points and enforcement issues, as
well as enabling authorization for simple applications. The workshop takes
place in Broomfield, CO.

+ Joint Techs Workshop, 18-22 July
The ESCC/Internet2 Techs Workshop will be held this summer at the Fawcett
Center, The Ohio State University, in downtown Columbus.  Hosted by the Ohio
Valley Internet2 Consortium, the workshop will offer a combination of
tutorials, plenary presentations, in-depth sessions and BoFs.  The summer
workshop will take a look at the implications of the coming revolution in
optical (switched) networking and National Lambda Rail and other local,
regional, or extra-regional user-owned networks.  Online registration is

<> Internet2 Webinar: Deploying and Supporting Federations
Internet2 corporate members are encouraged to participate in the Internet2
Webinar "Deploying and Supporting Federations" on 22 June at 11:00 am EDT.
Internet2 Webinars are "low-tech" seminars on advanced networking topics
designed to address issues facing corporate members. With just a phone and a
web browser, participants can join this interactive, educational forum
featuring presentations by industry and academic experts.  During the 22
June Webinar, Ken Klingenstein, Internet2 director of Middleware and
Security, and other presenters will discuss real-world practices for
deploying and supporting federations and approaches to addressing the
challenges of federated administration.

<> Industry Strategy Council Meeting
The Internet2 Industry Strategy Council Meeting was held 16 April. The
Council addressed Internet2’s strategic direction and the role of industry
in areas including cyberinfrastructure, digital media, optical networking,
fiber initiatives, international connections, middleware, network security,
and technology transfer. Presentations on topics discussed at the meeting

<> International Update
+ KOREN/KREONET2 (Korea) Enhanced Peering to Internet2 Abilene Network
On 25 May 2004, the national research networks of Korea, KOREN and KREONET2
announced they have expanded their connectivity to North America via a
trans-pacific 1.2 Gbps link to the Pacific Wave Seattle facility and from
there to the StarLight facility in Chicago via Canada's optical research
network CA*net 4.  At the Pacific Wave facility, KREONet2 and KOREN also
peer with Internet2's Abilene network at 1 Gbps. At the StarLight facility,
both networks are reachable via Abilene's 10Gbps connection to the StarLight
facility. KOREN/KREONet2 and Abilene have been interconnected as peer
networks since June 2001.  An international partnership agreement (MoU) has
been in place between the Korean advanced research and education networking
community through the Advanced Network Forum (ANF) and Internet2 since 2000.

+ Latin America Partners Actively Promoting Advanced Networking and
Applications
During April and May, Internet2 international partner organizations in
Brazil (RNP), Chile (REUNA), Mexico (CUDI), and Venezuela (REACCIUN2) held
their respective annual meetings. The meetings brought together leaders,
network specialists, researchers, users and international speakers to
discuss and promote the innovative use of advanced networks and to share
experiences and updates on the latest technologies and advanced applications

<> Middleware Update
+ Shibboleth
- Shibboleth v1.2
Shibboleth release v1.2 is now available from the Shibboleth Project web
page. This release is compatible with two previous releases of Shibboleth
v1.0 and Shibboleth v1.1. The new release includes increased configuration
flexibility in a complex multi-federation world; enhancements that are
specific to the Shibboleth Target; enhancements to the Shibboleth Origin;
and improvements to operational support. Work is underway on both a native
java target implementation and a web-based ARP GUI, but neither of these is
included with the v1.2 release.

- Shibboleth-Enabled Applications and Resources Web page
In response to suggestions from our members we have published a web page
with Shibboleth-enabled Applications and Resources Information. The page
lists organizations/services that are committed, interested, or have been
requested to Shibboleth-enable their services. Information includes
organization URL, contact, and status of Shibboleth implementation
(planning, development, testing, and production). If your organization would

- ISC Core Middleware Program Announcement
Shibboleth is included in 8 out of the 15 recently announced UK Joint
Information Systems Committee (JISC) projects in the Core Middleware
Technology Development Program. The Internet2 MACE-Dir Working Group is
involved as a partner within the program.  The Core Middleware Program page

+ NSF Middleware Initiative (NMI)
New NMI Release
NMI-R5 released on 24 May, includes two new components from the EDIT
Consortium:  Local Domain Person Object Class Study (Draft Results) and
Grouper Phase 1 Specifications (Draft) and revisions to or new versions of:
A-Select v1.3.1, Cosign v1.6.1, Look v1.0, OpenSAML v1.0, PERMIS 1.4,
Pubcookie v3.1, Shibboleth v1.2, and Video Middleware Cookbook - Directory
Services for Multimedia Conferencing v1.0.   For more information on the

+ MACE-MLIST
The newly-formed MACE-MLIST Working Group focuses on Middleware-Enabling
Mailing List software, with an emphasis on directory integration and
federated authentication/authorization.  The group is currently developing a
survey to identify desirable mailing features. The survey will be sent to
central and departmental IT organizations and large virtual organizations;
survey results will be used to map existing systems to the desirability
matrix and select an open source system to be modified accordingly.  New
members are welcome to join.

+ Signet Working Group
Signet, the newest MACE Working Group, will focus on developing a "privilege
management recipe" document describing privilege management concepts and
deployment methods. It will also produce a software toolkit that can be used
by organizations to deploy their own privilege management service. All
interested Internet2 members are eligible and welcome to participate.

<> Security Update
Security Professionals Meeting
The second annual EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Security Professionals Workshop took
place 16-18 May in Washington, DC, and proceedings will be available online
soon. The conference was well attended, with almost 250 attendees. Plans are
already in progress for next year's conference, which is scheduled for 3-5
April 2005.

SALSA (Security at Line Speed)
The two new SALSA Working Groups, NetAuth and Arch, are now underway.
Regular biweekly teleconference meetings for the two Working Groups have
begun. You are encouraged to join the discussion of these important issues

+ E2E piPEs (End-to-End Performance Initiative Performance Environment
System)
- Network Diagnostic Tester (NDT) Integration
Efforts continue to improve NDT code and documentation. Recent work has
included bi-directional throughput testing and working with the enhanced
Web100 kernel.

- One-way Latency Measurement  (OWAMP) & Bandwidth Control  (BWCTL)
There is ongoing development of OWAMP and BWCTL intended to fix a number of
known bugs and add new functionality. Both will be released in the coming
weeks. Several campuses (the ITECs) and government labs (associated with
ESnet) are actively engaged in setting up OWAMP and BWCTL beacons.

- Network Diagnostic Tester (NTP)
NTP data is now being collected for the Abilene network. This data will
enable better understanding of the current Abilene OWAMP data and shape
future development of the tool.

- H.323 Beacon
E-module code, written by RNP VoIP group in Brazil, is being integrated into
the H.323 Beacon, which will enable the H.323 Beacon to make automated
assessments of user-perceived quality for various audio codecs. It also can
be used in measurement infrastructures for regularly scheduled tests to
determine voice grade capabilities on the Internet backbones.

+ Internet2 Commons
The Internet2 Commons welcomes two new corporate sponsors, Tandberg and
First Virtual Corporation, who will be contributing to the Commons H.323
efforts. The Commons has begun to raise community awareness of both the
traditional service and the backup service that is currently available.

<> Applications Update
MIT and Collaborators Achieve e-VLBI Transmission Milestone
Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is one of the most powerful
techniques for high-resolution imaging of distant radio sources in the
universe and for making accurate measurements of the motion of the earth in
space. On 25 March, the first-ever successful real-time international
transmission and processing of VLBI data was conducted between Haystack's
Westford antenna in Massachusetts and the Onsala Space Observatory antenna
in Sweden. Data from the Onsala observatory were transmitted over the GEANT
network to New York and then over Internet2's Abilene Network to the
Haystack Observatory. Although the data streamed at relatively low bandwidth
(32 Mbps), it was still a milestone demonstration of real-time correlation
of data from two antennas simultaneously. Using Internet2's open source
End-to-End Performance Initiative Performance Environment System (E2E piPEs)
BWCTL (Bandwidth Control) component and intermediate BWCTL beacons in
Washington and London, researchers at Haystack could run tests between them
to assist in diagnosing transcontinental network problems during the
experiment.
