MACE-courseID Working Group Informational Announcement

A new working group,MACE-course ID, has been formed to focus on course
identifier descriptions. Chaired by Grace Agnew of Rutgers University,
the 
Internet2 Middleware Architecture Committee for Education (MACE), 
MACE-courseID, course identifier working group, will work on the
development 
of course identifiers for higher education and adapt existing development
for use in directory enabled infrastructures. This group will leverage
the 
eduPerson object class
(http://www.educause.edu/eduperson/)
that includes 
widely-used person attributes in higher educations and build on the 
standards work in IMS
(http://www.imsglobal.org/)
and OKI 
(http://web.mit.edu/oki/).

Course identifiers can be utilized for a variety of purposes such as
allowing faculty to set access for course materials and could later be
expanded to encompass a more standardized method of identifying courses
at 
universities. 

This information could enable the growing interest in identifying courses
that are appropriate for credit transfers across universities or aid in
streamlining university accreditation processes.

The working group objective is to deliver a course ID extension to the
eduPerson object class by the Internet2 Fall Member meeting. Activities
will 
be conducted via regularly scheduled phone conferences and e-mail. The
first conference call is scheduled for Monday, July 7th from 2:00 pm -
3:00 
p.m. EDT. Please e-mail  for the dial in number and
