<> National Science Foundation Solicitation "Strategic Technologies for the
Internet"
The National Science Foundation has announced a new round of grants under a
revised program called "Strategic Technologies for the Internet." The
Strategic Technologies for the Internet program is designed to stimulate the
development of critical infrastructure that advances the conduct of science
using commodity and/or advanced research networks. The focus areas for the
program are advanced applications, collaboration tools, network security,
and end-to-end performance. The program expects to have $6 million and the
deadline for proposals is April 24, 2003. For more information see:

<> National Science Foundation Panel Releases Cyberinfrastructure Report
"Revolutionizing Science and Engineering Through Cyberinfrastructure" was
released this week by the National Science Foundation's Blue-Ribbon Advisory
Panel on Cyberinfrastructure. The report covers topics such as optical
networking, end-to-end performance, international connectivity and
middleware. It calls for a major new NSF initiative in information
technology to meet the challenges facing science, engineering and education.

The February Internet2 Virtual Briefing will be held February 19 from
1pm-2:30pm EST and will focus on end-to-end performance measurement systems.
Current technology to assess network performance characteristics is quite
primitive, but there is work under way to provide tools and infrastructure
that will allow us to better understand performance issues. The presenters
will discuss topics such as current activities to determine performance
capabilities in grid environments (Global Grid Forum) and current research
in new measurement systems.

+ Include a Live Demo with your Spring Member Meeting Presentation
As Internet2 will not be featuring a separate demo area for high-performance
networking applications at the Member Meeting, we would like to strongly
encourage our members to incorporate live, interactive demos as part of
their track session presentations. Internet2 staff will provide members with
the technical support, and some of the equipment resources, required for
presenting these demos. Contact Elaine Lauerman via email
<>
or call (734) 913-4253 if you have questions.

<> International Update
+ Spring Member Meeting Speaking Opportunity
Do you know of a researcher or faculty member on your campus actively using
Internet2 networks and international connections? We're looking to identify
speakers for the upcoming Spring Member Meeting for a track session that
showcases people and projects at Internet2 member institutions using
Internet2 networks in the US and international connections to support
science, research, teaching and/or learning applications. Send proposals,
ideas, thoughts and your comments to Heather Boyles
<>
or Ana Preston
<>.

+ APAN 2003 meeting held in conjunction with The 3rd PRAGMA Workshop
On January 21-24, 2003, APAN held its first meeting of the year in Fukuoka,
Japan, where representatives and speakers from the Asia/Pacific region
joined to share information on advanced networking efforts, international
connections, and applications. This meeting was also held in conjunction
with the 3rd PRAGMA workshop. For more information see:

+ RHnet (Iceland) Upgrades Connection
Iceland's national research and education network, RHnet, has upgraded its
connection to NORDUnet to 55 Mbps. Iceland, as well as Denmark, Finland,
Norway and Sweden are reachable by Abilene users via NORDUnet, the Nordic
research and education network. NORDUnet is an Internet2 International
partner and connects with Abilene, the Internet2 backbone, through a 622
Mpbs connection in New York and a 155 Mbps connection to STAR TAP as well as
via GEANT, the pan-European research and education network with three
connections to New York and Abilene of 2.5 Gbps each.

<> Middleware Update
+ Shibboleth
Shibboleth development team is still on schedule with version 0.8 scheduled
for release in March and version 1.0 to follow in April. Additional
institutions such as the University of Washington, the University of
Wisconsin, and Dartmouth College, are participating in the early deployment
group.

In January, the Swiss Education and Research Network (SWITCH) Authentication
and Authorization Infrastructure (AAI) steering group backed the proposal of
the AAI project team to select Shibboleth as the architecture to use for AAI
in Switzerland. The Evaluation Criteria Task Force Report is available from
the AAI homepage (subsection documents) or directly from:
http://www.switch.ch/aai/pilot-docs/Arch_Eval_v10.pdf

+ Base CAMP February 5-7 Tempe, Arizona
The introductory middleware workshop, Base CAMP, will feature useful
information, ideas, and strategies to help successfully plan and implement
enterprise directories at colleges or universities. Presentations will be
posted shortly at:
http://www.educause.edu/conference/nmi/camp031/

+ 2nd Annual PKI Research Workshop: April 28-29
For the second year, Internet2, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and
the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are sponsoring a
PKI Research Workshop in Gaithersburg, MD. The Workshop seeks to foster a
long-term research agenda for authentication and authorization in
populations large and small via public key cryptography. Areas of interest
cover the full range of public key technology used for security decisions:
discovery and interpretation of security information, authentication,
authorization, etc. Papers and panel proposals were due January 31st, and
the workshop takes place April 28 and 29th. For more information, see:
http://middleware.internet2.edu/pki03/

+ Directories
The MACE-Dir working group is working on a profile that suggest one way to
manage values of eduPerson Entitlement to facilitate multi-party access
controls. The group is also initiating the development of a utility for
managing group information in registries and directories. For more
information, see:
http://middleware.internet2.edu/core/directories.html

<> End-to-End Performance Initiative (E2Epi)
+ Performance Measurement Workshop
A Performance Measurement Workshop is scheduled immediately after the Joint
Techs Workshop in Miami. The workshop includes presentations by Bruce
Lowekamp (The College of William and Mary), Jim Ferguson (NLANR DAST), Micah
Beck (University of Tennessee), Warren Matthews (SLAC), Nageswara Rao (Oak
Ridge National Lab), and Stanislav Shalunov (Internet2) focusing on work in
progress and future efforts. After the presentations, participants will
define coordination, direction, and next steps; collaborations will be
considered and the role of E2Epi in these efforts will be discussed. Close
to 50 participants have already registered; interested participants still
may register for the workshop when they arrive at Joint Techs.

+ piPEs/OWAMP
A BoF session is scheduled for Tuesday, February 4, at Joint Techs; during
this noon-hour session, Eric Boyd will provide an update on E2E piPEs and
Jeff Boote will discuss a tool the Internet2 Engineering group is
developing, based on the One-Way Active Measurement Protocol (OWAMP). The
E2Epi team plans to incorporate this tool as one of the first components of
the piPEs framework. OWAMP is being written as the sample implementation for
a proposed standard making its way through the Internet Engineering Task
Force (IETF). For more information, see:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-05.txt

Currently, the Engineering group is using an earlier version of the OWAMP
code to measure latencies on Abilene. At present, the code is being upgraded
to a new revision of the specifications. The goal is to have an alpha
release ready for the Joint Techs meeting in February 2003. For more
information on OWAMP, contact Jeff Boote
<>.
