How Teens Can Make a Difference

As Martin Luther King Day approaches, have your students join in conversation with a panel of local teens who have made a difference in their schools and in their communities. When we teach students about the Holocaust, we ask them to become an “upstander.” Let’s have our students talk about how they have already started to do that and give them suggestions for new ways for them to make a difference in the lives of others.Also learn about the Josiah DuBois Scholarship offered by the GHMEC to students in honor of Josiah DuBois, a former NJ resident whose actions are credited with helping to save hundreds of thousands of lives during the Holocaust.

Sonja's Legacy

The images in Sonja’s Legacy provide a unique way for children and adults to learn abo ut the Holocaust and tolerance. Meet Dr. Robert Fischl as he presents copies of his cousin Sonja’s artwork created when she was imprisoned in the Terezin Concentration Camp, family photographs, and tells his own story of survival.

Meet a Holocaust Survivor, a Concentration Camp Liberator, and the child of a Survivor

The United Nations has designated January 27th as the International Day of Commemoration of the Holocaust. Have your students join in a conversation with these eyewitnesses to history and get the insight of those whose lives have been changed forever because of the Holocaust, as well as students from 4 other schools.

Genocide in Today's World

Meet Dr. Jerry Ehrlich, who volunteered as a physician for “Doctors Without Borders” in Darfur, and discuss issues about Darfur and Genocide today.All students are required to watch the movie, The Devil Came on Horseback, before participating in this videoconference. (The video, which is approximately 80 minutes long and teacher’s guide will be provided upon registration.)

Many of the scenes in the movie are graphic, so we recommend this program for students in grades 9-12 only.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss's Birthday with The Goodwin Holocaust Museum and Education Center

Now, the Star-Bell Sneetches had bellies with stars. The Plain-Belly Sneetches had none upon thars. 

Those stars weren’t so big. They were really so small.

You might think such a thing wouldn’t matter at all...

Dr. Paul Winkler, the Executive Director of the NJ Commission of Holocaust Education will be reading the book “Sneetches” and leading a conversation on tolerance and understanding. Teaching suggestions for use after this videoconference can be found in The New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education: Caring Makes a Difference K-4th Grade Curriculum Guide. The St. Louis and its Voyage of the Damned

On May 13, 1939, the German transatlantic liner St. Louis sailed from Hamburg, Germany, for Havana, Cuba. On the voyage were 938 passengers, almost all were Jews fleeing from the Third Reich. Meet a survivor of this historic voyage and learn how the world let down these people, desperate for safety.

Regional Conference on the Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights with Sterling High School in Somerdale, NJ and The Goodwin Holocaust Museum and Education Center

Join in this all day conference on the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights as speakers and students discuss the history of the past, current human rights violations, and ideas to get students involved in today’s problems. Night by Elie Wiesel: A Book Talk

“Human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere.” ― Elie Wiesel from Night

Night, by Elie Wiesel, focuses on the final year of the Holocaust in Auschwitz, the Nazi death camp. Students will be given the opportunity to discuss and explore different aspects of the Holocaust, suffering and human rights through a series of thought provoking questions, recorded interviews with Elie Wiesel, and photographs. This will be facilitated by a leader in Holocaust education. (Upon registration, a variety of materials will be provided for historical context, suggested teaching strategies, and to stimulate classroom discussion.)

 All students are required to have completed the reading of the novel, Night, in order to participate in this program.

Meet a Concentration Camp Liberator and Honor Our Veterans

In preparation for Memorial Day...Students join in conversation with a Concentration Camp Liberator, other World War II veterans along with students from other schools. Schools have a unique opportunity to meet with real heroes and understand history from veterans who served our country during World War II.
