FYI. Given the urgency of the Crisis in Syria I hastily threw a show together on Syria and Egypt this Thursday September 12th 9:30-11a.m. in LC 155. I am going to stream the show. Professor Tariq Ramadan and Professor James Gelvin(bios below) have graciously agreed to be interviewed.

The United States government is prepared to launch an attack against Syria because they believe that Bashar al- Assad has used chemical weapons against his own people, that he has crossed a red line and that he must be held accountable.

1.Does the U.S. have irrefutable proof that Assad and not the Syrian rebels, used chemical weapons?

The Global Consortium for Sustainable Peace is proud to host Professor James Gelvin and Professor Tariq Ramadan in a discussion of the Crisis in Syria and Egypt.

James L. Gelvin is Professor of Modern Middle Eastern History at the University of California, Los Angeles. A specialist in the modern social and cultural history of the Arab East, he is author of four books: The Arab Uprisings: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford University Press, 2012); The Modern Middle East: A History (Oxford University Press, 2004, 2007, 2011); The Israel-Palestine Conflict: One Hundred Years of War (Cambridge University Press, 2005, 2007, 2013); and Divided Loyalties: Nationalism and Mass Politics in Syria at the Close of Empire (University of California Press, 1998).

Tariq Ramadan is Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at the Oxford University (Oriental Institute, St Antony’s College) and also teaches at the Oxford Faculty of Theology. He is Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, (Qatar) and the University of Malaysia Perlis; Senior Research Fellow at Doshisha University (Kyoto, Japan) and Director of the Research Centre of Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) (Doha, Qatar).
