Islam and Sharia: Are they compatible with the U.S. Constitution and American Democracy?

with Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi

Sharia is a word that is bandied about quite a lot these days. A discussion of sharia law is apt to excite strong emotions and, at times, violent protests. But what exactly is it? What are its sources and does anybody speak authoritatively in defense of sharia law? Does it promote theocracy? Is it compatible with western democracy? Is sharia law and the U.S. Constitution on a collision course or can they both exist harmoniously? Finally, what is the relationship between sharia law and women, jihad, and terrorism?

Please join us for a stimulating discussion of Sharia Law with Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi.

 Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi

Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi born in India in 1943, received his Islamic education at Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow, India. He graduated from the Islamic University of Madina in Saudi Arabia in 1965 with a higher degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies. He received an M.A. in Theology from Birmingham University in England and a Ph.D. in Comparative Religion from Harvard University in the USA.

Since the 1970s, Siddiqi has been actively involved in interfaith dialogue by co-founding and currently serving as president of the Academy for Judeo, Christian and Islamic Studies. Siddiqi is a respected Muslim American leader who has built platforms for education and dialogue by creating understanding to counter xenophobia. In September 2001, he was invited by former President George W. Bush to offer a Muslim prayer at Washington National Cathedral.

The Los Angeles Times recognized Siddiqi as one of the 100 most influential people in California. “The religious leader of thousands of Southern California Muslims at a time when xenophobia is running high, he has been a leader in driving home the point that Muslims in the U.S. are peace loving.”
