[Apologies for cross-postings…] Be it Election Day 2012, Antietam in 1862 or Cairo in 2011, MAGPI Fall 2012 programs explore new ways to critically examine pivotal moments in history. MAGPI extends a national invitation to educators and students to take part in three dynamic programs that uniquely approach politics in distinctly different ways. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: September 20, 2012 Time: 3:15 PM - 4:15 PM EDT Target Audience: Grades 9-12 educators in social studies, civics, government, English, and history Information & Registration: http://www.magpi.net/Community/Programs/Identifying-Deceptions-Political-Rhetoric-0 Presented by the Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Kathleen Hall Jamieson, and political reporter Eugene Kiely, educators will learn how to use the award-winning website FactCheck.org and its sister site FlackCheck.org to help students distinguish between fact and fiction, and teach political literacy skills—with real examples from the 2012 campaign trail. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: September 27, 2012 Time: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM EDT Target Audience: Grades 9-12 students, community college students Information & Registration: http://www.magpi.net/Community/Programs/Civil-War-and-American-Art The Civil War and American Art, linked to the 2012-2013 special exhibit of the same name at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, examines how American artists represented the impact of the Civil War and its aftermath. The exhibition follows the conflict from palpable unease on the eve of war, to heady optimism that it would be over with a single battle, to the growing realization that the conflict would not end quickly and deepening awareness of issues surrounding emancipation and the need for reconciliation. *Conflict Resolution and Service Learning Options As part of a pilot program on conflict resolution and community engagement sponsored by MAGPI and The Good Shepherd Mediation Program, participants in Civil War and American Art program have the opportunity to translate some of the themes through the conflict resolution course You, Conflict Resolution, Your Community and performing a service-learning project. Separate registration is required. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: December 6, 2012 Time: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM EDT Target Audience: 7-12 students Information & Registration: http://www.magpi.net/Community/Programs/Revolution-Within On January 18, 2011, Asmaa Mahfouz, an Egyptian activist, helped change the course of history. Through social media, she and other members of April 6 Youth Movement, a group she co-founded, called her nation to action. And act, Egypt did—propelling the country into the Arab Spring movement. Through dynamic writing exercises, students will learn history and see the world—and themselves—in new and exciting ways on a journey with author Patricia Dunn to the epicenter of a pivotal moment in history through Dunn’s book Rebels by Accident. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For questions or more information on MAGPI programs: Anika Trahan MAGPI Manager of Educational Services 215-573-6417 -- Jennifer Oxenford Manager, Member Relations & Communications MAGPI Twitter - @magpik20 484-604-0831 (google voice) 215-898-0341 (office) 215-74MAGPI (215-746-2474) |
